More and more I am writing ceremonies that are tailored to each couple I work with, using very little boilerplate language. I just returned from Elm Bank in Wellesley, Massachusetts where I officiated for Steve and Shana. They worked hard to incorporate their Jewish and Catholic roots in a ceremony that was lovely and personal. I'll be at The Shattuck and Cathedral of the Pines frequently during the months of June through October and at the Bedford Inn as well. Zorvino Vineyards and The Currier Museum in Manchester are also venues I'll be visiting. I'll be heading to Templeton, Mass in August to officiate for the sister of an earlier bride. I do feel lucky!!!! Thank you for trusting me to be an integral part of your special day.

2008 exceeded my expectations! I had the honor of officiating at many civil union ceremonies, many winter weddings and the summer months were full, finding me mostly in Cheshire County (Fitzwilliam, Rindge, Jaffrey, Keene), but also venturing into other counties in New Hampshire, as my schedule allowed. In August I was at the York Beach Harbor Inn, in York Beach, Maine, with a co-officiant, and September I was in Holyoke, Mass, which was especially nice. Without my husband's constant support, traveling as extensively as I did wouldn't have be possible. I thank him for creating memories that will last a lifetime. I'm amazed that some of the small towns we ventured into even exist, and all we experienced was by virtue of my Justice of the Peace commitments.

2007 was a busy wedding year! Meeting so many wonderful couples, who I know are going to be spending long and full lives together, left me feeling happy. Thank you for the honor of allowing me to officiate at your ceremonies. I especially enjoyed writing, based on your own words and thoughts, what I felt was a perfect ceremony for each couple I worked with. I am a better person for having been a part of your special day! Thank you again for the memories!

Writing ceremonies and ultimately officiating at a couple's marriage is all about privilege! A thought provoking ceremony is a wonderful segue into married life, a way to affirm and celebrate the decision to become partners in the company of family and friends. That being said, I would consider writing your vows and ceremony an honor. I love the spoken word and weaving traditional or non-traditional vows together with readings of your choice as well as having an understanding of wedding nuances, allows me to achieve a ceremony tailored to each couple. It is hugely satisfying to be a witness to the process of solidifying a promise for the future. If you would like a short, simple ceremony, without any fuss, I can honor that request too. If you prefer to write your own ceremony, but need an officiant to express your feelings for one another, you've come to the right person. I have officiated at weddings as large as two hundred people and as intimate as three people, including the bride and groom. You decide whether you would prefer a religious or non-religious ceremony. As Shakespeare wrote, "the world is your oyster."

Officiating at small country weddings for couples who have lived together for a while, and for any variety of reasons decide to make it official, is a joy. I can usually do something spontaneous so don't hesitate to call me last minute. I have performed remarriages for couples who decide they are happier together than apart, which is very nice and actually not that unusual. If I can't accommodate you, I am more than happy to refer you to another Justice of the Peace. The picture of Mike and Maureen on this, my home page, is from their wedding in Rindge. Their original Justice of the Peace had to have open heart surgery so I stepped in at the last minute. It was an intimate gathering and I'll hold the memory of their wedding in my heart because everyone was so nice and easy to work with. It felt like we had always been friends. I have performed as many as three weddings in one day, because they were in two hour intervals and all close enough so this was manageable. If you look at my calendar and see a specific date booked, don't hesitate to ask about availability. If the locations and times don't overlap I may be able to accommodate you. I pride myself on always looking professional and will inquire about colors so I don't clash with the bridal party.

Click on LOCATION/VENUE, and FEE for more information.

Click on PHOTOS, PHOTOS PAGE 2, PHOTOS PAGE 3, PHOTOS PAGE 4, PHOTOS PAGE 5 and PHOTOS PAGE 6 to see how stunning some of the couples I've officiated for are!

Click on TESTIMONIALS to hear what some couples have to say about their wedding ceremonies. Everything was absolutely perfect! We sincerely appreciate your efforts, and your patience with our best man! The puzzles were great. Our guests made many compliments about you, so we just wanted to let you know that your speech was wonderful. With many thanks, Michelle & Matt

Kevin and I had decided that we wanted a Gothic twist to our ceremony, that is the way we live and wanted our ceremony to reflect us. Jane had no problem with the uniqueness of our attire, and untraditional vows that we had written ourselves, she was amazing, and spoke with the feelings that we wanted to convey in our vows. Not only were we extremely happy with her our family was also touched by the ceremony performed. People say you get what you pay for, in this case we got far more! If you feel strongly about attention to detail and are very organized, perhaps you'll need less time to plan. If you like to take your time and chip away at a project, then obviously you'll need at least 6 mos to plan your ceremony.

I don't waste any time putting together a ceremony once I get the green light from a couple.

Would you recommend holding a formal rehearsal?

It depends on the venue and the length of the ceremony. If you have a large bridal party then it makes sense to gather the day or evening before your ceremony to make sure that every one involved knows their positions and knows the elements of the ceremony. I never do an entire read through, because it's important to maintain an element of anticipation for everyone involved. I will, however, make sure that the best man and maid of honor know what their roles are going to be with rings, flowers, etc. My aim is to lessen the angst a bride and groom feel as their big day approaches and if a rehearsal is wanted, then I try to be available.

Have you ever served more as a reader than a writer?

Most definitely and I've enjoyed myself immensely, because I know there are times when a bride and groom know what their ceremony is going to consist of and they don't need my guidance to write the ceremony for them.

How long do most ceremonies last?

I write a ceremony that generally lasts between 15 and 20 minutes and that length has never failed to be perfect!
It's not anti-climatic because it's too short and people don't get bored because it's too long.

What elements are in a wedding ceremony?

An Introduction/Greeting is always the way I begin a ceremony. It's the time I choose to thank those assembled for serving as witnesses. A piece of music is always wonderful after the Introduction. I can literally see audience members sit up straighter in their seats and pay closer attention when a piece of music is being performed. It adds a certain reverence. A reading is nice too if music is not something you would choose to have in your ceremony. I encourage my couples to choose a reading that is not boilerplate, because so much of the time, the same readings are heard at weddings. I have read passages from literature that resonate for my couples and those readings make the ceremonies I officiate at, more meaningful. Next would be vows, either reciprocal or written by the bride and groom and then ring vows. Before the closing, I encourage another element which the bride and groom chooses that would perhaps commemorate parents for their love and support, or acknowledge the absence of a loved one who could not be present. Then we would close and I would pronounce the couple officially married.

Am I comfortable performing a religious ceremony?

Most definitely. I have performed vow renewals that are very religious, because some couples feel strongly that their renewal ceremony should mirror their original ceremony. I am not ordained, but I grew up in the church, so my level of comfort is never compromised when I am asked to bring religion into a ceremony. I do not wear a robe, because I am not ordained and I do not wish to pretend that I should be cloaked as a Minister or Pastor. I am spiritual, however, and love investigating ways to promote spirituality in a wedding ceremony.

Even though you're a Justice of the Peace for the State of NH, can you perform ceremonies in Massachusetts?

Yes and I have officiated in Holyoke, Cohasset, Newburyport and Topsfield. This year will find me in Wellsley and Templeton, Mass. There is a one page waiver that allows me to officiate in Massachusetts and I can fax that from my office 6 weeks before the ceremony.

Would you entertain different venues, that are non-traditional?

Yes. I am happy to listen to any bride and groom's suggestion for a venue.

CIVIL UNIONS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

I have had the honor of officiating at many civil unions since New Hampshire's law became effective of January 1, 2008, and I am happy to answer any questions you may have! Some couples have already had commitment ceremonies and merely want to legalize their union so they can enjoy all the inherent rights other couples have. I have short ceremonies and more intimate ceremonies if that's what you would like.

What is a civil union? A New Hampshire civil union is not a marriage. It is a legal status, parallel to civil marriage at the state law level, in which the parties to the civil union “shall have all the same benefits, protections and responsibilities under New Hampshire law as are granted to spouses in a marriage.” While civil unions provide access to state-based legal rights, responsibilities and obligations of marriage, other states are not obliged to recognize New Hampshire civil unions. New Hampshire’s civil union law does not grant the 1138 federal rights associated with marriage. This includes favorable provisions regarding federal taxes, Social Security benefits, immigration, veterans’ benefits and more. When will the law take affect? The New Hampshire law becomes effective on January 1, 2008. Licenses become available December 1st. Who can get a New Hampshire civil union? As of January 1, 2008, a person is eligible to enter into a New Hampshire civil union if that person: 1. Is not a party to another civil union or a marriage; 2. Is of the same sex as the other party to the civil union; 3. Is at least 18 years of age; 4. Is not closely related by blood to the other party to the civil union (matching essentially the same restrictions applicable to marriage). Do we need a New Hampshire civil union if our relationship is already recognized elsewhere? No. A civil union or a marriage legally contracted outside of New Hampshire shall be recognized as a civil union in this state, provided that the relationship does not violate the prohibitions of this chapter. Can we get married in Canada, and have that marriage recognized in New Hampshire after January 1, 2008? Yes. The marriage will be recognized as a civil union under New Hampshire law. How do we apply for a civil union? In order to obtain a New Hampshire civil union license, both parties must appear in person and complete an application worksheet with the clerk of any city or town in New Hampshire. You must bring a photo i.d., proof of age, a copy of the final divorce decree, if either or both parties are divorced and a copy of the death record of a spouse, if either or both parties are widowed. A marriage (civil union) license in New Hampshire is “issued for a marriage (civil union) ceremony to be performed in any city or town in the state of New Hampshire.” The clerk is then required to complete a worksheet of “statistical and legal information” on both of the parties. When all of the forms are completed, the city or town clerk prepares the civil union license, which is valid for not more than 90 days from the date of filing.
Licenses will be available starting December 1st. Who can perform a civil union? Justices of the peace, a New Hampshire ordained minister or clergy in good standing. What protections do we gain from a New Hampshire civil union? A New Hampshire civil union gives you automatic inclusion within and under hundreds of New Hampshire state laws that apply to couples that are married. To view a complete list go to www.NHFTM.ORG This is what the new law says: 457-A:6 Rights, Obligations and Responsibilities. Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, the parties who enter into a civil union pursuant to this chapter shall be entitled to all the rights and subject to all the obligations and responsibilities provided for in state law, that apply to parties who are joined together pursuant to RSA 457 [in a marriage]. These are some of the areas of the law that are affected by the civil union law:

 family law; title, tenure, descent and distribution, intestate succession, wills, survivorships, or other incidents of the acquisition, ownership or transfer (during life or at death) of real or personal property;

 state and municipal taxation; probate courts and procedure;

 financial disclosure and conflict-of-interest rules;

 emergency and non-emergency medical care and treatment, hospital visitation and notification, and authority to act in matters affecting family members;

 state public assistance benefits;

 crime victims’ rights;

 Marital privileges in court proceedings.

Employer based health insurance:

 If you are employed by the federal government, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) means that you will not get spousal or family benefits.

 NH state employees will get spousal and or family benefits, however the value of these benefits will be deemed income and you will pay income tax on that income.

 Most private sector employees are governed by the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). There are two types of coverage under ERISA: insured plans and self-insured plans. Insured plans can be regulated by state law and must offer spousal and family benefits to those covered under NH civil union law if they offer those benefits to heterosexual married couples. Private employers who self-insure can chose weather or not to offer spousal and or family benefits to those covered by NH civil union law.

Divorce To end a NH Civil Union couples will go through the same process as heterosexual couples. Requirements for dissolving a civil union are:

 Where both parties were domiciled in the state when the action was commenced; or

 Where the plaintiff was so domiciled and the defendant was personally served with process within the state; or

 Where the plaintiff was domiciled in the state for one year next preceding the time the action was commenced.

Portability

 NH civil unions are NOT guaranteed recognition outside of New Hampshire

WEDDING SONGS
Let Them Be Little by Billy Dean

This is my favorite wedding song written by John Lennon and sung by
Mary Chapin Carpenter - Grow Old With Me.

Daddies & Daughters by LeRoy Parnell - my daughter's
daddy/daughter song. I have contacted and have been accepted to officiate at both Cathedral of the Pines & Shattuck Golf Course, so if you request information from them, you'll see my name listed as an available Justice of the Peace for their facilities. I performed a wedding at The Grandview Inn in Jaffrey on Valentine's Day of this year and it was romantic. I was at Zorvino Vineyards on June 16, 2007 with a couple who I had worked with for months and it was beautiful. The Atkinson Country Club was the elegant venue for a wedding on June 23, 2007, and the grounds are breathtaking, although not as pretty as the bride that particular day. On 7/7/7, I was in Keene at Ashuelot Park, and that was a unique and fun experience as well. St. Francis Chapel on Stone Pond in Marlborough on August 3rd was charming and lovely - a cathartic experience. My husband and I were in Newburyport, Mass., by the sea, for the wedding of some dear friends on August 18th. The view at Alyson's Orchard was spectacular on August 27th. On September 20th, Searles Castle in Windham, a Thursday evening wedding, was an honor to be a part of. Mt. Monadnock was the setting for an October 13th wedding. October 19th found us at the Topsfield Commons in Topsfield, Mass., for the wedding of our friends' daughter. October 27th, was Tara and Kevin's day in Swanzey, at their home. In November I performed a ceremony for a couple from Oklahoma. It was a private affair and lovely. Instead of flowers, the bride held a family bible from the 1800s, a treasured heirloom and the bride's ring was a gift from her aunt, who is no longer living. It certainly gave new meaning to "Something old, something new, something borrowed ..." Christmas Eve I performed a remarriage for a couple who had been married for 18 years, were apart for one year and decided they are much happier together than apart. Their children were their witnesses, their daughter read a poem and their son held their rings. What a great way to ring the New Year! In January I was at The Goddard Inn to officiate at my first civil union. In February I was at the EF Lane Hotel and the Chesterfield Inn for two lovely and intimate gatherings. March is always a favorite month to perform weddings, because it's right on the fringe of spring. Starting at the trail head, my husband and I hiked into Pisgah Park with a couple and performed a lovely ceremony. We came out with beautiful pictures and a sense of what it is to celebrate and witness the beginning of a life together. I was in York Beach, Maine at the York Harbor Inn, to partake in my best friend, son's wedding along with a Maine Notary. In August, I was back at Searles Castle in Windham, by the pond, at The Yard Restaurant in Manchester in May, and at C.R. Sparks in Bedford in June to officiate for another friend's daughter's wedding. June, July and August found me at a beautiful girls' camp in Fitzwilliam on Laurel Lake, Cathedral of the Pines, The Shattuck, Hidden Hills and the Keene Country Club, which are all wonderful venues. In September, I traveled to Holyoke, Mass., to the Log Cabin, which was breathtaking with Mt. Tom in the distance. So you see, you can choose from a variety of beautiful locations in New Hampshire or any other state for that matter, big, small, simple, extravagant or somewhere in between. I'm open to most anything. In fact, traveling extensively as a Justice of the Peace has provided a new dimension to my own marriage, because my husband is not only my chauffeur, but will come along to some of my more remote venues to take pictures and provide companionship and support.

2008 promises to be a busy wedding year! My calendar is already filling up!

REHEARSAL

More often than not I am happy to attend a rehearsal on your behalf. It puts the bride and groom at ease on their wedding day and though I don't read a ceremony through, I will at least inform the bridal party of certain elements so they know what to expect, i.e. readings, different elements (sand ceremony, unity candle, invoking the four directions, etc.) so everyone has an idea of the length of a ceremony. We will practice processing in, introducing any speakers, talk about the ring exchange and then process out so everyone know their positions.

I charge more to attend a rehearsal, because it becomes a pseudo wedding without the pomp and circumstance.

VENDOR LISTINGS

My son, Zach,and my son-in-law, Matt's tuxes by J.P.M. Obviously, if you would like me to officiate, attend a rehearsal and you expect me to travel some distance from my home in Keene, I will charge you more. I will not charge you for a meet and greet, as long as our meeting place is reasonably close to my home in Keene. If your ceremony will be in Cheshire County I will charge you a flat fee that includes an initial consultation and ceremony editing if need be. If your wedding will be outside of Cheshire County, then I will
charge a bit extra to cover mileage. I do all my own writing and pride myself on turnaround time for writing a ceremony. I will talk with you first before I quote you a fee. If I am going to be a reader of your ceremony, more than a writer then I will
not overcharge you. My rates are reasonable and are in line with other JPs in the area.

2008 CALENDAR

 2008 dates already chosen:
January 18th - Sarah & Bryan, Keene, NH
January 26th - Dana & Brian, Claremont, NH
February 13th - Dawn & Tim, Keene NH
February 23rd - Kimberly & Christopher, Chesterfield Inn, Chesterfield, NH
May 23rd - Sophie & Phil, Cathedral of the Pines, Rindge, NH
June 6th - Morgan & Nick, CR Sparks, Bedford, NH
June 14th - Alisha & Jeremy, Fitzwilliam, NH
August 9th - Jessica & Ian, The Shattuck Inn, Jaffrey, NH
August 31st - Missy & Luke, Cathedral of the Pines, Rindge, NH
September 20th - Alyssa & Joe, Best Western, Keene, NH
October 11th - Sarah & Sean, Keene Country Club, Keene, NH

SAMPLE READINGS

Blessing For A Marriage

By: James Dillet Freeman

May your marriage bring you all the exquisite excitements a
marriage should bring, and may life grant you also patience,
tolerance, and understanding.
May you always need one another - not so much to fill your
emptiness as to help you to know your fullness. A mountain
needs a valley to be complete; the valley does not make the
mountain less, but more; and the valley is more a valley because
it has a mountain towering over it. So let it be with you and you.
May you need one another, but not out of weakness. May you
want one another, but not out of lack. May you entice one
another, but not compel one another. May you embrace one
another, but not out encircle one another. May you succeed in all
important ways with one another, and not fail in the little
graces. May you look for things to praise, often say, “I love you!”
And take no notice of small faults.
If you have quarrels that push you apart, may both of you hope
to have good sense enough to take the first step back.
May you enter into the mystery which is the awareness of one another’s presence - no more physical than spiritual, warm and near when you
are in separate rooms or even distant cities. May you have
happiness, and may you find it making one another happy. May
you have love, and may you find it loving one another.

I Promise

By Dorothy Colgan

I promise to give you the best of myself and to ask of you no more than you can give. I promise to respect you as your own person and to realize that your interests, desires and needs are no less important than my own. I promise to share with you my time and my attention and to bring joy, strength and imagination to our relationship. I promise to keep myself open to you, to let you see through the window of my world into my innermost fears and feelings, secrets and dreams. I promise to grow along with you, to be willing to face changes in order to keep our relationship alive and exciting. I promise to love you in good times and in bad, with all I have to give and all I feel inside in the only way I know how. Completely and forever.

On Love

By Thomas Kempis

Love is a mighty power, a great and complete good. Love alone lightens every burden, and makes rough places smooth. It bears every hardship as though it were nothing, and renders all bitterness sweet and acceptable. Nothing is sweeter than love, nothing stronger, nothing higher, nothing wider, nothing more pleasant, nothing fuller or better in heaven or earth; for loves is born of God. Love flies, runs and leaps for joy. It is free and unrestrained. Love knows no limits, but ardently transcends all bounds. Love feels no burden, takes no account of toil, attempts nothingbeyond its strength. Love sees nothing as impossible, for it feels able to achieve all things. It is strange and effective, while those who lack love faint and fail. Love is not fickle and sentimental, nor is it intent on vanities. Like a living flame and a burning torch, it surges upward and surely surmounts every obstacle.

Untitled

Arthur Unknown

You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving. The great acts of love are done by those who are habitually performing small acts of kindness. We pardon to the extent that we love. Love is knowing that even when you are along, you will never be lonely again. And great happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved. Loved for ourselves. And, even loved in spite of ourselves.

The Apache Blessing

Now you will feel no rain,
for each of you will be shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there will be no loneliness,
for each of you will be companion to the other.
Now you are two persons,
but there is only one life before you.
May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead
and through all the years.
May happiness be your companion and your
days together be good and long upon the earth.

TRUE LOVE
~ By Author Unknown ~

True love is a sacred flame
That burns eternally,
And none can dim its special glow
Or change its destiny.
True love speaks in tender tones
And hears with gentle ear,
True love gives with open heart
And true love conquers fear.
True love makes no harsh demands
It neither rules nor binds,
And true love holds with gentle hands
The hearts that it entwines.

A Prayer
by Robert Louis Stevenson

Lord, behold our family here assembled.
We thank you for this place in which we dwell,
for the love that unites us,
for the peace accorded us this day,
for the hope with which we expect the morrow,
for the health, the work, the food,
and the bright skies that make our lives delightful;
for our friends in all parts of the earth.
Amen.

Ecclesiastes 3

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

Hands of the Bride and Groom

These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that
are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today,
tomorrow and forever.
These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future.
These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other.
These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind.
These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow and tears of joy.
These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children.
These are the hands that will help you to hold your family as one.
These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it.
And lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching
for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.

“Happiness in Marriage"

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In the “art of marriage” it is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say “I love you” at least once a day. It is never going to sleep angry. It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship shouldn’t end with the honeymoon, it should continue through all the years. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is being friends and respecting each other’s individual personality. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a big sense of humor. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is finding room for things of the spirit. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is in being the right partner.

On Love by Thomas Kempis

“Love is a mighty power, a great and complete good.
